How to Rank in AI Search: What We Found Auditing 11,534 Businesses

We scored 11,534 South Carolina businesses on AI search readiness. Not one earned an A. What the gap looks like and how to close it before your competitors do.

In 2026 we audited 11,534 Google Business Profiles across South Carolina, scoring each on traditional local search readiness and on AI search readiness separately.

Not one business earned a top grade for AI readiness. The average gap between a business's local SEO score and its AI readiness score was 24.7 points.

The businesses losing ground right now mostly do not know it yet.

Why the gap exists

Local SEO earns you a slot in a list of ten links. AI search returns one recommendation.

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Overview for a contractor in their town, the model assembles a single recommendation from what it can state about you with confidence about each business. Ambiguity gets you left out.

What AI search rewards

  • Unambiguous structured data. LocalBusiness schema stating exactly what you do, where, and for whom. Without it the model infers, and inference introduces doubt.
  • Consistency across sources. If your website, your profile, and three directories describe you differently, the model has no confident answer to give.
  • Content that answers questions directly. Not keyword-stuffed pages. Plain answers to the questions a customer would type.
  • Third-party corroboration. Reviews, citations, and mentions that independently confirm what you claim about yourself.
  • Specificity over breadth. A page that says exactly what you do in one city beats a page that gestures at everything everywhere.

The test worth running today

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overview to recommend a business like yours in your city. Then ask each one what it knows about your business specifically.

Most owners are surprised twice. First that they are missing from the recommendation entirely. Second that when the model does describe them, half of it is wrong or years out of date.

Why this window closes

Right now the bar is on the floor. Zero businesses in an 11,534-business sample cleared it. That means the work required to be the recommended answer in your market is smaller today than it will ever be again.

This is folded into every local SEO engagement, because optimizing for 2018 while your customers search in 2026 is a slow way to disappear.
